Pregnancy
PREGNANCY
Pregnancy is generally a time of changes – physically, mentally, and emotionally – for women. Pregnancy can last in duration for 40+ weeks from conception to delivery however normal duration is considered between 38-42 weeks. The shift in the center of gravity created by the addition of weight in the front in the breasts and the abdomen, challenges a pregnant woman’s structural integrity.
The following are some of the body’s adaptations to pregnancy:
- Heart – increased size of the left ventricle leading to increased stroke volume; increased heart rate; increased cardiac output
- Respiratory Centre – increased sensitivity to carbon dioxide; increased depth of breath; increased volume of air per breath; increased oxygen supply; increased carbon dioxide removal
- Rib Cage – raised and flared; increased volume of air in each breath
- Diaphragm – rises by approximately 4 cm; increased distance to depress; increased volume of air in each breath
- Gastrointestinal System – decreased motility; increased nutrient absorption
- Joints – increased joint laxity/flexibility; widening of pelvis during birth
- Muscles – decreased glycogen stores by 3rd trimester; favouring of glucose for baby; mother uses fat stores
- Typical weight gain – 10-14 kgs
Some of the following symptoms may be experienced:
